Alan Shepard made his successful trip into space on May 5, 1961 – the first American in space.

Gus Grissom was the second American to fly in space in 1961. As commander of AS-204 (Apollo 1), Grissom died along with his fellow astronauts Ed White and Roger B. Chaffee on January 27, 1967, during a pre-launch test for the Apollo 1 mission at Cape Kennedy, Florida.

John Glenn was the third American in space, and the first American to orbit the Earth,
